Betsy DeVos helped shape the future of low-income families

Betsy DeVos is a renowned American businesswoman and politician. She was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the year 1958. Now, she is the 11th and current Secretary of Education in the United States. Her father, Edgar Prince, was an automobile entrepreneur. She has a younger brother who once worked with CIA as well as Navy SEAL. He also founded Blackwater USA.

 

Betsy DeVos is married to Dick DeVos, a former CEO of Amway and son to Richard DeVos. For some years now, DeVos’ family has been listed among the wealthiest families in America. In 2016, Forbes magazine listed DeVos family under the 100 most affluent American families, with a $5.4 million net worth estimate.

 

Her education background

 

Betsy DeVos went to Holland Christian High School which is a privately run high school at the heart of her hometown of Holland, Mich. She later joined Calvin College in 1979, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business economics.

 

Since her college days, Betsy DeVos has been involved in politics. She once acted as the student leader at Calvin College.

 

Business career

 

Betsy DeVos is the head of Winquest Group, which is a privately owned company that invests in clean energy, technology, and manufacturing. The company was founded by Betsy and her husband back in the year 1989.

Also, Betsy and her husband Dick hold large shares at Neurocore, a company that specializes in biofeedback of major brain disorders such as autism, anxiety, depression and much more.

 

Philanthropy

 

Betsy and her husband have donated tens of millions of dollars through their philanthropic family foundation, Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, which was launched in 1989.

 

Much of their charitable donations reflect their excellent Christian upbringing and beliefs. They are trying to help the ordinary citizen live an easy life by driving positive political and social reforms. Perhaps it would be interesting to see the overall breakdown of Betsy’s family overall donations.

 

It is not surprising that over half of the donations went to education. Ever since, Betsy has been in forefront fighting for education reforms, to enable every American child to access education, without zip code barriers. She is also the co-chair of Education Freedom Fund. The program has enabled needy families all over Michigan to educate their kids through scholarships.

 

About 25% of their giving was channeled to community and health projects, 13% to religious institutions, and a whole 12% went to arts.

 

Through Betsy’s programmes, the school attendance of children from low-income families increased by 30 percent. Now that she is the Secretary of Education, more families are looking up to her.

 

Betsy DeVos has pioneered many programs that have helped parents lift education burdens. She supported a program called Kids First which aimed at giving parents tax credits to enable them to access more choices when it comes to kids’ education.

 

Many success stories demonstrate how Betsy DeVos has helped many achieve their dreams. She has helped Detroit by bringing together career experts, business leaders, and the youths.
